DOH records 5,979 additional coronavirus infections

The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, May 17, recorded 5,979 additional cases of coronavirus disease (COVID).

With the new cases, the country's active cases stood at 54,235, wherein mostly have mild symptoms or 93.3 percent.

The DOH said that two percent of the active cases are asymptomatic. However, 3.4 percent are in either critical or severe condition, while 1.25 percent have moderate symptoms.

Meanwhile, there were 6,602 new COVID-19 survivors, causing the recovery tally to increase to 1,076,428.

The death count is currently at 19,262 as 72 new fatalities were added to the tally.

The overall healthcare utilization in the National Capital Region, the country’s epicenter of coronavirus infections, is now “down to 48 percent,” said DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

“When we say that it is the overall healthcare utilization, this includes the ICU (intensive care unit) utilization, isolation utilization, and the ward utilization,” she said.

“When we talk about ICU utilization, it is down to 61 percent compared to when we were peaking to as much, I think, 88 percent... As to the temporary treatment and monitoring facilities, we have 36 percent utilization rate,” she added.

Despite improvements in the healthcare utilization rate in NCR, Vergeire reminded the public to still be vigilant by following the minimum public health standards.

“Dapat po natin lalong paigtingin at paghuyasin ang ating pagsunod dito nang sa ganon ay tuluyan na nating maipababa ang kaso dito sa (We must intensify and strictly comply with the protocols so that we can finally reduce the cases here in) NCR and the other areas in the country,” she said.
