PH records 5,790 new coronavirus infections

The country's COVID-19 caseload continues to increase as 5,790 more people got infected with the viral disease, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

The Philippines' cumulative case count jumped to 1,143,963 on Sunday, May 16. Of this tally, 4.8 percent or 54,904 people are considered active cases or those who are still receiving treatment.

Of those who are currently sick, 93.3 percent are experiencing mild symptoms, 2.1 percent are asymptomatic, 1.4 percent are in critical condition, 1.9 percent have severe symptoms, while 1.23 percent are in moderate condition.

The death toll also rose to 19,191 after 140 more patients lost their lives due to the viral illness, the DOH said. The country's case fatality rate is currently at 1.68 percent.

Meanwhile, 7,541 more people have recovered, raising the number of recoveries to 1,069,868--equivalent to 93.5 percent of the country's total number of cases.

“Fourteen duplicates were removed from the total case count. Of these, 10 are recoveries,” the DOH said.

“Moreover, 90 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” it added.

The DOH said that six laboratories were not able to submit their data on time, thus, their data is not yet included in the latest count.
