Heat index values in 20 areas reach over 40°C

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) continued to record "dangerous" heat index values across the country on Sunday, May 16, due to the prevalence of warm easterlies.

Dagupan City, Pangasinan still topped the areas with the highest heat index values registered on Sunday at 49 degrees Celsius (°C).

The heat index is the measurement of how hot it feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

The following stations recorded the top 20 heat index values on Sunday, based on the monitoring of the PAGASA.

Dagupan City, Pangasinan (49°C, 2 p.m.)

Sangley Point, Cavite (46°C, 2 p.m.)

Aparri, Cagayan (45°C, 2 p.m.)

San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (45°C, 11 a.m.)

Ambulong, Batangas (44°C, 2 p.m.)

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (44°C, 2 p.m.)

Cotabato City, Maguindanao (43°C, 2 p.m.)

Masbate City, Masbate (43°C, 2 p.m.)

Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (42°C, 2 p.m.)

El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental (42°C, 2 p.m.)

Iba, Zambales (42°C, 2 p.m.)

NAIA, Pasay City (42°C, 2 p.m.)

Butuan City, Agusan del Norte (41°C, 11 a.m.)

Casiguran, Aurora (41°C, 2 p.m.)

A heat index between 41℃ and 54℃ is under what the PAGASA considers as dangerous level due to the high likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

The highest heat index so far in 2021 was recorded in Dagupan City, Pangasinan on May 14 at 53℃.

PAGASA said the whole country will continue to have hot and humid weather conditions on Monday, May 17, due to the prevalence of the easterlies.

How to stay cool amid the scorching weather

However, there is a chance of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms by afternoon or evening.

Due to the possibility of sudden heavy rains during severe thunderstorms, PAGASA advised the public to take necessary precautionary measures in case of flooding or landslides.
