Faithful urged to be more discerning on social media

The Catholic faithful were encouraged to be more discerning on the different information they read on social media.

Manila Apostolic Administrator Bishop Broderick Pabillo said that people should "choose well what we receive" on social media platforms.

"Huwag natin lasunin ang ating isip at damdamin ng mga mali, ng mga mahalay at ng mga masamang mensahe (Let us not poison our minds and emotions with vulgarities and bad messages)," he said in his homily at the Radyo Veritas Chapel on Sunday, May 16.

Social media has become a vital tool in spreading information today, said Pabillo.

"Sana makita natin na hindi lang tayo taga-tanggap ng balita. We are not just passive receivers. Tayo rin ay taga-pagbalita at taga-pagbahagi ng balita (Hopefully, we can see that we are not just news receivers. We are not just passive receivers. We can also deliver or share news to others)," he said.

"Sana magandang balita ang binibigay natin. Maging maingat tayo na hindi tayo magpapalawak ng masamang balita at ng maling balita (Hopefully, we're spreading good news. Let's be careful that we don't spread bad and false news)," he added.

Pabillo urged the faithful to “use the social media to connect and to give.”

"Gamitin din natin ang social media upang magbahagi at magpalawak ng Magandang Balita (Let's also use social media to share and spread the Good News). We can be missionaries by our fingertips," he said.

"Matutupad natin ang huling habilin ni Jesus ang humayo tayo at ipahayag ang mabuting balita kahit na mula sa bahay natin. Sundin natin si Blessed Carlo Acutis (We can fulfill the last will of Jesus--which is to proclaim the Good News even from our homes. Let us follow Blessed Carlo Acutis). At 15 years old he was already a digital missionary spreading the good news of the Holy Eucharist through the internet," he added.
