Nayong Pilipino site for mega vaccination center a reclaimed area, not a forest — Mayor Olivarez

Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez said that the planned construction of the mega vaccination center at the Nayong Pilipino will not be detrimental to the residents of the city.

In an interview over DZMM, Olivarez mentioned that the lot where the mega vaccination facility is set to be built is a reclaimed area, not a forest.

"It's a reclaimed area and wala po siyang natural na talaga po na puno doon. Iyon po'y lumaki lang po doon ordinarily (There are no natural growing trees there because it's a reclaimed area. It just grew there ordinarily)," he said.

He added that the area of Nayong Pilipino is also far from the Las Piñas–Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA).

Olivarez has said that he supports the construction of the mega vaccination facility since it would not just be favorable for his city but for the entire National Capital Region (NCR) as well.

The Nayong Pilipino Foundation Board of Trustees (NPFBT) has said in a statement that the "abrupt cutting" of close to 500 trees and other site works in the NPF Property will kill the existing ecosystem.

Once built, the mega vaccination center is expected to speed up the National Vaccination Program since it has the capacity to cater up to 10,000 people a day. Its construction is led by billionaire businessman Enrique Razon Jr. through his International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) Foundation.

Vaccine czar and chief implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. mentioned that the mega vaccination facility's construction has been approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Infectious and Emerging Diseases (IATF-EID) through Resolution No. 109 dated April 10.

Due to the absence of the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the NPFBT and the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19, construction has not yet commenced.
