Mother celebrating daughter's 7th birthday on street goes viral

To celebrate the birthday of her daughter, a homeless mother taped a cardboard box inscribed with “Happy 7th birthday, Janella” and nearly inflated balloons on the roll-up door of a closed establishment in Makati City.

The heart-warming scene was photographed by netizen Kim Raytos. Her Facebook post about the mother and child has gone viral, garnering over 19,000 reactions and nearly 11,000 shares. She posted it on May 12.

Janella, the birthday celebrator, was wearing a unicorn-themed dress and black school shoes. Meanwhile, her mother was wearing a sleeveless shirt, denim shorts, and slippers.

“Napansin ko ‘to kanina habang nakasakay ako sa taxi galing Makati. Akala ko kung ano ang cute kasi ng bata na naka-unicorn na dress tapos nabasa ko sa may karton nakasulat 7th birthday niya pala (I noticed this earlier while I was riding a taxi in Makati. I find it cute because the child was wearing a unicorn dress, then, I read on the cardboard that it was her 7th birthday),” she said in her post.

“At ‘yung kasama niya siguro mommy niya. Naiiyak lang ako ksi kaht anong hirap ng buhay nila nagawa pa rin nila i-celebrate ‘yung 7th birthday ng bata kahit sa simpleng paraan lang. Nakakatuwa na nakakaiyak kasi bilang isang ina lahat gagawin niya makita lang masaya ‘yung kanyang anak (And the one with the girl was probably her mother. It made me cry because no matter how hard their lives were, they still managed to celebrate the child's 7th birthday even in a simple way. This made me sad and happy at the same time because as a mother, she will do everything she can to see her child happy),” she added.

In the now-viral post of Raytos, many mothers commented that they will also do the same thing to make the seventh birthday of their children special despite the pandemic.

“Napaiyak ako nung nabasa ko ito (This made me cry). Indeed, mothers would do everything just to make their children happy kahit gaano man kahirap ang buhay (even during these trying times),” a netizen commented.

In an update, netizen Dustin Jose said that many people went to help the child and her mother who are currently staying on M. Reyes St. in Barangay Pio Del Pilar, Makati.

“They were very thankful to the people who went to help them,” he commented in the post of Raytos, accompanying it with their photos.
