LOOK: P763-M smuggled cigarettes, cars, agri products smashed by backhoe

Various seized goods such as counterfeit cigarettes and smuggled cars worth P763 million were destroyed by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) via backhoe-thrashing.

The destroyed items were all seized during the first three months of 2021, the bureau said in a statement Friday, May 14.

Fake cigarettes and agricultural goods amounting to P561 million; hazardous food, raw products, and poultry needs amounting to P111 million were among those condemned.

Smuggled automobiles estimated to be worth P51.276 million were also destroyed.

Also condemned were garments, assorted goods, and general merchandise valued at P31 million; mechanical and electric goods with an estimated value of P1.577 million; chemicals worth P5.535 million; and scrap metals amounting to P1 million.

The bureau said that prior to the disposal, the seized goods underwent legal procedures and were forfeited in favor of the government for violation of various pertinent provisions of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).

The items were subjected to disposal through condemnation pursuant to Sections 1139 to 1151 of the CMTA, it added.
