FAMOUS: Pokwang reveals real-life mom issues

In a virtual media conference organized by Regal Entertainment for its Mother's Day offering “Mommy Issues,” we asked Pokwang, lead star of the film, on real-life issues that she encountered while growing up with her mother.


“Nag-survive kami kahit papaano. Mga 1980 kami lumipat sa Antipolo. Hanggang ngayon, dito pa rin kami. Hindi ko alam kung paano kami makaka-survive talaga, mahirap kasi pagkakasyahin mo yung pagkain. (We survived in a way. It was in 1980 when we transferred in Antipolo. I just can't remember how we really survived then. Our food was scarce).


"Yung pag-aaral namin, alternate din. Hihinto muna yung iba, pagbibigyan muna yung mas nakababata. Nag-abot-abot nga kami nung Grade VI. Apat kami na sabay-sabay nag-graduate kasi kailangan namin magbigay ng daan sa mas nakababata. So, kailangan mong huminto muna. Tapos yung mga pinagliitan na damit, ipapasa mo sa mga kapatid mo na mas bata. Kumbag, talagang ang higpit ng aming pamumuhay.” she said. (We went to school on an alternate basis. Some will enroll, others will not. There's four of us who are like that. Some need to stop going to school because we need to give way to the younger ones. Then, if my dresses do not fit with me anymore, i will pass it to the younger siblings. It was really hard).


Yet the challenges only made Pokwang stronger and wiser.


"Okay lang, yung mga challenge na nangyari sa buhay ko noong mga bata pa kami. ito yung nagpapatatag sa akin sa kung ano ako ngayon." she added. (These challenges are okay. It made me tough).


One big issue Pokwang faced with her mom was when she decided to work abroad.


“Nagsinungaling ako sa kanila nung pumunta ako sa Japan. Menor de edad ako noon. Hindi nila alam na nagpa-practice na ako ng Japan-Japan. Mga 16 years old ako, finorward lang yung edad ko kasi kailangan ko nang umalis. Gusto kong makatulong sa pamilya dahil nakikita ko yung kahirapan. 'Ano ba itong buhay ko, parang wala nang pag-asa?' Nagsinungaling talaga ako sa kanila. Ang alam nila nag-aaral ako sa Rizal High School sa Caniogan, Pasig. Ang hindi nila alam, ang laman ng bag ko, e, pang-rehearsal ng Japan-Japan." (I lied to my mom that I went to Japan. I was minor then, about 16 years old. I wanted to help my family so I went abroad. They thought I was only studying in Pasig. I had clothes in my school bag for my rehearsals).


Pokwang added: "Nang dumating yung visa ko, hindi ko alam kung papaano ko sasabihin dahil alam ko na hindi ako papayagan, napakabata ko pa. Iyak nang iyak ang nanay ko, sobrang halos atakihin na sa galit. Sabi niya, ‘Hindi ka puwedeng umalis kasi napakabata mo!’ Wala naman silang ginawa dahil umalis talaga ako. Alam kong masama ang loob niya pero wala nang magagawa, gusto kong makatulong sa pamilya. Yun ang nakita ko na super na-stress sila sa ginawa ko. Sabi ko, 'Pasensiya na pero kailangan ko nang gawin ito. Gusto kong makatulong.'" Pokwang said. (My mother learned about it. She was crying, and she doesn't me to leave because I was a minor. Still I left for Japan. I told them I needed to do this to help the family.)
