Very sharp decline in COVID-19 cases seen in San Juan -- Zamora

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said on Thursday that the city is now seeing a very sharp decline in active COVID-19 cases.

"Here in San Juan, from 1,296 on April 12, it's now down to 280 and this is really the effect of the ECQ (Enhanced Community Quarantine) and MECQ (Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine)." Zamora said in an interview with CNN Philippines.

The mayor said the Metro Manila Council (MMC) held a meeting yesterday to come up with a recommendation for the National Captial Region's (NCR) next quarantine classification starting May 15. He personally voted to ease the quarantine classification to General Community Quarantine (GCQ) but stressed that it should be a stricter kind of GCQ to prevent the surge in COVID-19 cases.

"Now that the overall hospital utilization rate in Metro Manila is improving and the active cases of all Metro Manila cities are improving, I believe that it is now time to reopen the economy but not at a rate that will possibly cause another surge," Zamora said.
