Pinoy duo roars back in World Cup of Pool

Jeff de Luna and Roberto Gomez came roaring back from a huge deficit to stun Billy Thorpe and Skyler Woodward of the United States, 7-5, Wednesday, May 12 (early Thursday, May 13 Manila time) and reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup of Pool in Milton Keynes, England.

The Filipino duo was on the verge of exiting the tournament after the Americans raced to a 5-0 lead, but De Luna and Gomez were able to make up for their early miscues by taking the successive racks on their way to claiming a spot in the last eight.

De Luna and Gomez will take on Denis Grabe and Mark Magi of Estonia Thursday, May 13 (early Friday, May 14 Manila time) for a berth in the semifinals of the $250,000 (P11.9-million) tournament.

Estonia knocked off the Great Britain A pair of Jayson Shaw and Chris Melling, 7-6, in stunning fashion when Shaw scratched the cue ball after sinking the 8-ball in the hill-hill final rack.

De Luna and Gomez could have put the Philippines on the board in rack No. 3, but they committed a scratch on the 8-ball which allowed the United States to extend its lead to 3-0.

Another chance of scoring a rack win was wasted in the fifth when a poor preparation resulted in missing a tough-angled shot on the 9-ball, handing the US a 5-0 advantage.

The Philippines began its rally by taking three straight racks before stealing the next one after Thorpe’s bank shot on the 7-ball rattled the corner pocket.

It was one of the breaks De Luna and Gomez took in order to pull off an escape act and extend their run in the English town.
