Araneta Coliseum to serve as QC's mega vaccination site

The Smart Araneta Coliseum, also known as the Big Dome, will be Quezon City's mega vaccination site and will start operating on Saturday, May 15, the local government announced on Thursday.

Mayor Joy Belmonte said the Araneta Group has agreed to allow the city to use its facility to help achieve its goal of completing the roll out of the city's COVID-19 vaccination program to priority groups.

Belmonte said the Big Dome will be able to accommodate 1,000 to 1,500 individuals daily.

"It is a suitable site for a massive and critical government health drive since it offers adequate space and accessibility to both our healthcare workers and the public," the mayor said. She thanked the Araneta Group for the generous gesture.

"The faster we vaccinate our people, the sooner we can achieve economic recovery," she added.

Health measures for indoor settings to avoid the virus spread such as proper filters and fan systems for adequate ventilation will be installed, according to Belmonte.

Business Permits and Licensing Department (BPLD) head Margie Santos said the Araneta Group also vowed to provide its own medical personnel to help inoculate senior citizens and persons with comorbidities.

The Tzu Chi Medical Foundation Philippines, a non-profit charitable organization, will also offer assistance by sending volunteer doctors, nurses, and staff to the city's vaccination sites.

Belmonte said she looks forward to the success of this partnership as “we need an all-of-city approach to overcome COVID-19 and ensure the speedy recovery of our economy.”

The city previously partnered with Araneta Group in expanding its free COVID-19 swab testing initiatives. Araneta City was tapped since the fourth quarter of 2020 as a venue for the local government's free RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) tests for the general public.

The Araneta Group also allowed the free use of the Araneta City BusPort as the site for the drive-thru COVID-19 RT-PCR saliva testing of the Philippine Red Cross.
