New voter registration schedule and satellite registration

There is good news this week! Starting May 10, 2021, the new voter registration schedule has reverted to Monday to Fridays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Office of the Election Officer (OEO). This is a very good development. Before May 10, the schedule was from Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Adding two hours every day, plus one additional day in the week, will be a big boost in processing applications for voter registration. I hope people take advantage this change and register ASAP.
There’s also another new development. COMELEC also resumes satellite voter registration. Saturdays are now designated as satellite registration days. This is a big help in enticing people to register as voters. Specially for our countrymen who live in the provinces. Many barangays are far from the población, and bringing the registration process to the barangay (specially far-flung and island barangays) will not only encourage more to register, but it will also help in the verification process.
With regard satellite registration, any interested party may request for offsite voter registration in their area by writing a letter to the election officer of the city or municipality where you intend to have satellite registration conducted, subject to the following guidelines and in accordance with COMELEC Resolution Nos. 10549 and 10674:

- The prospective number of applicants to be serviced must be at least 200;
- Barangay halls/centers, public and private schools and universities, malls and commercial establishments, or other public and convenient spaces may be used as satellite registration sites. Please ensure there is adequate space and ventilation in the site:
- The site must not be owned, leased or occupied as residence by any incumbent local executive official or any person who is related to any local executive official within the fourth civil degree of consanguinity or affinity, or leader of any political party, or be under the actual control of a political party or religious organization;
- The site must be in an area which is not under any lockdown classification, or those under GCQ or MGCQ with no reported infections 14 days immediately preceding the scheduled satellite registration;
- Proper coordination with the local health officials; and
- There must be strict observance of the health and safety protocols under item 4, of COMELEC Resolution No. 10674.”
