ITCZ, trough of LPA to bring scattered rain showers, thunderstorms over Mindanao

A low pressure area (LPA) embedded in the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) may bring scattered light to at times heavy rains over most parts of Mindanao in the next few days.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Ariel Rojas on Wednesday, May 12, said the LPA has a slim chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours and may dissipate once it hits land.

As of 3 p.m., the LPA was estimated at 495 kilometers east of Davao City, moving west towards Mindanao.

While it is not expected to intensify into a cyclone, the LPA may still bring significant rains over Mindanao in the coming days.

Rojas said scattered rain showers and thunderstorms with occasional moderate to heavy rains may affect the southern portion of the country.

"Under these conditions, isolated to scattered flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are likely during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA warned.

"Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels," it said.
