Fil-Am cyclist critically injured in hit-and-run in Hawaii

A Filipino American cyclist sustained critical injuries in a hit-and-run in Ewa Beach in Hawaii.

Bernardo Doria, 38, was on his way to meet with his group at around 7 a.m. when he was suddenly hit by a pick-up truck that was overtaking an SUV on Hanakahi Street last April 30, according to a report from Hawaii News Now.

Doria was immediately brought to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. He sustained head and neck injuries, liver laceration, and broken bones from the incident.

Authorities said the driver fled the scene without giving aid to the victim.

Doria's wife, Jennifer, is pleading with the suspect to come forward.

“It’s cowardly. I can forgive and have closure at least if they just come forward,” Doria told Hawaii News Now.

She added that her husband rides his bike through the Ewa Beach and Kapolei areas every weekend.

“I just can’t believe we live among people like this. Accidents happen but if you’re hiding, that’s something different and evil," she added.

Doria is still in the hospital, recovering from his injuries.

"It was really bad. He had a lot of broken bones," his wife said in a Balitang America report.

She also hopes that what happened to her husband will serve as a reminder to drivers to be mindful of bicyclists.

Police Sgt. Chris Kim of Honolulu Crimestoppers also reached out to those who have information to come forward or call Honolulu CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

“If you do notice a vehicle, a gray-colored pick up truck, possibly a Ford, that has front end damage to the driver’s side light housing as well as the grill area, please contact us."
