Dota 2's The International is back with over P1.9-billion prize pool

The International (TI), the most anticipated tournament of Dota 2, is set for a roaring comeback in August this year with yet another record-breaking prize pool in the history of all esports.

TI10 or the 10th edition of the annual world Dota 2 tourney which was postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic boasts of a $40,018,195 (over P1.9 billion) prize pool, surpassing the previous record of $34.3 million set by TI9.

Game developer Valve announced on Wednesday, May 12, that the world championship will be held from Aug. 5 to 15 in the same planned venue of Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden.

The top teams from the six regions during the 2021 Dota Pro Circuit will battle it out for the lion's share of the prize pot which got boosted by the 25 percent of last year's Battle Pass sales.

The group stage will run from Aug. 5 to 8 while the main event will get going from Aug. 10 to 15.

"As we continue to plan the event around the shifting landscape presented by the ongoing global pandemic, our focus remains on finding ways to hold a high quality tournament in the safest way possible," Valve said in a blog post.

"This means we're waiting to release additional details on attendance options as we gather more information on developments heading into summer," it added.

Valve's announcement obviously stirred excitement among the Dota community, including some Filipino teams and players who are vying for coveted spots in TI10.

All-Filipino powerhouse teams TNC Predator, OB x Neon Esports, Execration and Smart Omega are all competing in the DPC through the Southeast Asia Upper Division which leads to the Major tournaments.

Valve also launched the Supporters Clubs, a new feature that allows the fans to support their favorite teams in the DPC by purchasing bundles of badges and equippables.

Teams provide the content in the bundles, with fifty percent of the purchase going directly to them. As of now, 17 teams are featured in the Supporters Clubs and more squads are expected to be included in the coming days.
