DOH confirms 4,842 new COVID-19 cases

The Department of Health (DOH) detected 4,842 more coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, raising the Philippines' overall tally of confirmed infections to over 1.1 million.

For two consecutive days, the DOH reported more than 4,000 new coronavirus infections.

The case bulletin released on Wednesday, May 12, showed that the country's confirmed number of cases have already reached 1,118,359 since the pandemic started last year.

Another 8,312 patients have survived from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,046,431.

The death count increased to 18,714 as 94 more patients died because of the viral illness.

The new recoveries and deaths brought down the number of active cases in the country at 53,214.

Of the active cases, 93 percent are mild, 2.4 percent asymptomatic, 1.4 percent critical, 1.9 percent severe, and 1.23 percent moderate.

DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III expressed hopes that the daily number of new cases will continue to decrease.

"We’ve seen a downward trend in the number of cases and we are quite optimistic about the downward trend and hopefully we can sustain this," he said in an interview over ABS-CBN News Channel.

"This cannot be done without everyone’s cooperation, everybody has a role to play here - both at the individual and community level,” he added.
