5.8-magnitude quake jolts Occidental Mindoro

A moderately strong earthquake measuring 5.8-magnitude on the Richter scale rocked Occidental Mindoro on Wednesday morning, May 12, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The quake, which originated 11 kilometers (km) northwest of Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro, was recorded at around 9:09 a.m. It had a depth of 106 km.

It was felt as a "strong" quake at Intensity V in Lubang and Mamburao in Occidental Mindoro and Calatagan and Calaca in Batangas, while it was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Abra De Ilog and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Lemery, Mabini, Malvar and Tingloy in Batangas; Cabuyao and Famy in Laguna; and Calapan City and Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro.

Phivolcs said it was a "weak" shaking at Intensity III in Agoncillo, Balete, Bauan, Cuenca, San Pascual, Talisay, Batangas City and Lipa City in Batangas; Obando in Bulacan; Amadeo, Carmona, Dasmariñas, Indang, Mendez and Tagaytay City in Cavite; Biñan, Calamba, San Pedro and Santa Cruz in Laguna; Boac in Marinduque; Makati City; Mandaluyong City; Manila City; Pasay City; Pasig City; Quezon City; Taguig City; Paluan in Occidental Mindoro; and Cainta in Rizal.

It was also felt as a "slight shaking" at Intensity II in Taysan, Batangas; Plaridel, Bulacan; Cavite City; Nagcarlan, Pakil, Rizal and Santa Cruz in Laguna; Caloocan City; Malabon City; Marikina City; Navotas City; Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro; Lucena City and Mulanay in Quezon; Binangonan, Rizal; and Olongapo City.

The quake was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Lucban and San Francisco, Quezon and San Mateo, Rizal.

Phivolcs' instruments also measured the quake at Intensity V in Calatagan, Batangas and Lubang, Occidental Mindoro; Intensity IV in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Intensity III in Carmona, Cavite; Tagaytay City; Muntinlupa City; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Calapan City; and Quezon City; Intensity II in Calumpit, Marilao, Plaridel and Plaridel, Bulacan; Las Piñas City; Malabon City; Mandaluyong City; Marikina City; Pasig City; Dolores and Gumaca, Quezon; and Olongapo City; and Intensity I in Baler, Aurora; San Jose City, Nueva Ecija; Guagua, Pampanga; Infanta, Lopez, Lucban and Polillo in Quezon.

Science and Technology Undersecretary and Phivolcs OIC Renato Solidum said the earthquake was caused by the movement along the Manila Trench--an earthquake generator located offshore west of Luzon Island, roughly parallel to the Philippine archipelago in the north but veers very close to land at the southern tip of Occidental Mindoro.

Phivolcs does not expect damage to property due to the 5.8-magnitude earthquake, however aftershocks are likely to occur.
