4.7-magnitude quake hits Nueva Ecija, felt in Quezon City

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake was recorded in Nueva Ecija on Wednesday evening, May 12, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

It initially reported the tremor to be at magnitude 4.1.

Phivolcs registered the earthquake at around 7:15 p.m. and traced its epicenter at 12 kilometers (km) southwest of Carranglan, Nueva Ecija.

It said the quake was felt as a "moderately strong" tremor at Intensity IV in Carranglan, Lupon, and Umingan in Nueva Ecija.

It was also felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in San Jose, Nueva Vizcaya and San Mateo, Rizal; and as a "slight shaking" at Intensity II in Tayug, Pangasinan; Bongabon, Gabaldon, Guimba, Laur, Rizal, Natividad, and Pantabangan in Nueva Ecija; Clark, Pampanga; and Quezon City.

Meanwhile, it was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Baguio City, Villasis in Pangasinan, and Cabanatuan City, Gapan City and Palayan City in Nueva Ecija.

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the earthquake at Intensity III in San Jose, Nueva Ecija; Intensity II in Dagupan City, Pangasinan; and Intensity I in Baler in Aurora, Palayan City in Nueva Ecija, and San Ildefonso in Bulacan.

It said the quake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.

Moreover, it was shallow at a depth of 4 kilometers thus the strong shaking.

Phivolcs does not expect damage to property nor aftershocks to occur.

A moderately strong 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Occidental Mindoro on Wednesday morning was also felt in Metro Manila.
