135 Pasay City barangays now COVID-free

The Pasay City local government unit (LGU) has cleared 135 barangays in Pasay City of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases after they were able to manage the spike in cases in March.

In the latest tally of the City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CESU) on Tuesday, the city logged a total of 139 active COVID-19 cases with 21 tagged as new cases. Only 66 out of 201 barangays in the city have recorded COVID-19 cases.

This is a great imporvement from the city's figures during the surge of COVID-19 cases in March, which, according to Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano, reached as high as 1,200.

The first local cases of the South African variant of COVID-19 were detected in Pasay City on March 2. Weeks before that, a spike in COVID-19 cases was recorded in the city.

The city's downward trend was cited by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benjamin Abalos Jr. who lauded the city's initiatives to combat and stop the spread of COVID-19.

Abalos urged other local government units (LGUs) to follow what the city did in combating the virus.

Rubiano attributed to aggressive contact tracing efforts the drop in the number of COVID-19 cases. In April, she said, cases from three digits went down to two digits.

She added that the city government intensified its aggressive contact tracing from 7,300 in February to 34,000 in March.

The Pasay City General Hospital also reported a downtrend in number of COVID-19 patients being admitted. Dr. John Victor de Gracia, PCGH officer-in-charge, himself tested positive for COVID-19 during the surge in March along with 15 other employees of the PCGH.

In April, De Gracia said that despite the downtrend, the hospital remains at 100 percent capacity with moderate to severe cases of COVID-19.

On May 10, De Gracia said the occupancy rate in PCGH has further gone down to 40 percent. He said 13 COVID-19 beds and six Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in the hospital are now vacant.
