But if I go, I will send him to you

REFLECTIONS TODAY Jesus’ disciples have been with him already for a long time (Jn 14:9). Now, he is telling them that he needs to go and to leave them. He has to go to prepare a place for his disciples in his Father’s house where there are many dwelling places (Jn 14:2). Today’s Gospel tells another reason for Jesus’ departure: to send the Advocate. He will send the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father, in order that his disciples may never be left orphans (Jn 14:18). Jesus always wants his disciples to be with him. His disciples, while still in the world, will continue to feel his abiding presence through the Holy Spirit. Let us never forget that Jesus never wants us to be separated from him. Do we, in turn, exert effort to be closer to him? Is our everyday life Advocate-driven? GOSPEL • JOHN 16:5-11 Jesus said to his disciples: 5“Now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. 7But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.
