DFA confirms death of PH embassy employee in India due to COVID-19

A career officer at the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi has succumbed to COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday.

“Yes, that is indeed the case. We have one death due to Covid among our personnel in the Philippine Embassy in India,” DFA Executive Director for Strategic Communications Ivy Banzon-Abalos said in a message when asked to confirm the report.
Sources at the Department said the male officer who was serving as an Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) officer of the Embassy died on Monday morning, May 10, 2021.
Last week, the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi confirmed the death of two other Filipinos due to coronavirus while 73 others were infected following the catastrophic second wave surge of COVID-19 cases in India.
As of today, data from COVID-19 online monitoring platform Worldometers showed that India has 22,662,575 total confirmed cases, 246,146 fatalities, and 18,671,222 recoveries.
Meanwhile, the DFA reported five new COVID-19 cases among Filipinos abroad. No new recoveries and fatalities were recorded in its latest tally.
Since the outbreak began in February last year, the total number of COVID-19 cases among overseas Filipinos is now at 18,545. Of this total, 6,036 are undergoing treatment, 11,349 have recovered, and 1,160 died due to infections.
