Medical expert to moms who just gave birth: Have your vaccines right away

For those mothers who just gave birth and were dilly dallying about getting themselves vaccinated against coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a medical expert has a message for you: Have your vaccines right away.

Dr. Sybil Lizanne Bravo, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OB-GYN) infectious diseases specialist of the University of the Philippines- Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) said it is safe for mothers who just gave birth to receive COVID-19 jabs.

"Particular this COVID vaccine ngayon puwedeng puwede na po pagkalabas ng baby, preferably kung kaya, kaso wala pa sa system natin. After delivery, kung kayo ay makaka-lineup na po for COVID vaccine sa inyong LGU magpabakuna na po agad safe ang COVID-19 vaccine sa breast feeding o sa post-partum or kapapanganak na nanay. Please have your vaccine right away po (Particularly this COVID vaccine, this can be immediately received after the delivery, preferably if possible, however we don’t have yet the system. After delivery, if you can line up for COVID vaccine in your LGUs, have yourselves vaccinated immediately, COVID-19 vaccine is safe for breastfeeding or postpartum or moms who just gave birth. Please have your vaccines right away),” she said during a public briefing.

She said those who contracted COVID-19 before their second dose should wait for at least two weeks.

“Ang minimum interval ay two weeks basta kayo ay asymptomatic, wala na kayong nararamdaman (The minimum interval is two weeks as long as you are asymptomatic, you feel nothing),” Bravo said.

“Anytime puwede na magpashot, basta two weeks na kayo nakarecover at wala ng sintomas (Anytime you can receive your shot as long as you have recovered for two weeks and have no symptoms),” she added.

She took the opportunity to remind pregnant mothers to avoid going out and stay at home for their safety.

In the early stage of pregnancy, she said, the mothers were advised to avail teleconsultation and coordinate with health centers for their medical needs,instead of physically going to a clinic.

While, those who are about to give birth and those with comorbidities are expected to see their doctors for their medical check up, Bravo said.

She said those pregnant mothers should practice hygienic measures and observe health protocols so as not to contract COVID-19.
