Gong Yoo-Park Bogum's 'Seobok' leads top-grossing films in South Korea in April

Korean stars Gong Yoo and Park Bogum’s sci-fi movie “Seobok” became the No. 1 top-grossing film in South Korea in April.

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) released the rankings of the top movies in April. The number of movie tickets sold in Korea in April totaled 2.56 million, down from 3.25 million in March.

Films shown in April earned 23.53 billion won ($21.05 million), a decrease of 22 percent from 30.15 billion won ($26.97 million) in March. There were 85 films released in April, lower than 92 films in March.

“Seobok,” released on April 15, took first place for the month, selling 367,565 tickets and earning $3.09 million, or a revenue share of 14.67 percent among films shown in April.

In second place is “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train,” which sold 346,577 tickets and earned $3.01 million.

“Godzilla vs. Kong,” released last March 25, placed third with 299,184 tickets sold and revenue of $2.64 million.

In fourth place is “The Book of Fish,” released on March 31, which had 292,050 tickets sold and revenue of $2.38 million in April.

Placing fifth is controversial actress Seo Ye-ji and actor Kim Kang-woo’s “Recalled,” released on April 21, with 207,232 tickets sold and gross of $1.6 million.

Here are the 10 top-grossing films in South Korea for the month of April:

  5. “Recalled” - 207,232 / $1.6 million
  6. “Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet” - 153,095 / $1.29 million
  7. “Minari” - 142,400 / $1.13 million
  8. “Nobody” - 128,963 / $1.1 million
  9. “Waiting for Rain” - 83,528 / $614,813
  10. “The Courier” - 62,029 / $453,670
