What is 'truth' in media?

Published Apr 9, 2021 07:00 pm

This webinar will help us understand the value of factual, objective reporting in this age of misinformation

Technology is a double-edged sword. As it gets easier to relay information to a wider audience, foreign trolls, filter bubbles, and fake news surface. Because of the convenience of the internet, first-hand access to “real” facts has become harder. This is where media literacy and critical thinking come in.

To help people become better media consumers as well as practitioners to be more efficient reporters and content creators, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Angelicum has organized an online session about the role of the Dominican virtue “veritas (truth),” in our society and its relationship with the various aspects of media.

Distinguished media personalities who will share their knowledge and expertise at the event include Christian Esguerra of ANC, Jaime Santiago of the advertising firm TBWA/Santiago Mangada Puno, Howie Severino GMA Network, Inc., Carlo Lorenzo Datu Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Xyza Bacani of Redux Pictures, as well as Jeff Canoy, Kori Quintos, and Robert Labayen of ABS-CBN Corporation.

The media has become more forceful, has begun to recognize its traditional historic role and act on it, and truth is infectious.

The webinar also encourages future media practitioners as well as society leaders to embrace truth in thoughts, words, and deeds.

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Program of UST Angelicum, a consistent recipient of recognition from the Catholic Mass Media Awards and the Philippine Student Quill Awards, spearheads the online session.

Those interested with the event can view the live stream on UST Angelicum College’s Facebook Page on April 16, from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
