The start of the PBA’s 46th season will now be up to the Inter-Agency Task Force after the league’s top brass laid down its plans before two key government officials in Malacanang on Wednesday, April 28.
Commissioner Willie Marcial and San Miguel Corporation sports director and Barangay Ginebra team governor Alfrancis Chua met with Sen. Bong Go and executive secretary Salvador Medialdea to discuss the PBA’s plans to start the new season despite the current COVID-19 situation in the country.
Go said the ball is now on the IATF if it sees fit to allow the PBA to go ahead with its planned two-conference season as early as late-May or early-June.
“IATF will still go through the process of their appeal to study well. It also depends if the number of cases of COVID-19 will decrease, especially in NCR plus,” said Go after the meeting with Marcial and Chua.

The PBA was hoping to open the season under a closed-circuit format this month but a spike in COVID-19 cases prompted the government to impose stricter quarantine protocols inside the NCR Plus.
Under current guidelines of the IATF and the Joint Adminstrative Order, the PBA can only stage its season in areas under Modified General Community Quarantine. President Duterte approved the extension of Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine guidelines in Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal and Bulacan until at least May 14.
The league has not ruled out the staging of a bubble, even entertaining an offer from the provincial government of Ilocos Norte.
“I’m also one of those who are thirsty to watch basketball again. But the safety of every Filipino is our priority now and that's what PBA wants to make sure that they can open in a safe way for players, coaching staff, team personnel and fans,” Go said.
Also discussed was the PBA’s plan to vaccinate its players, coaches and staff, and Go said the government of the league’s inoculation program,
“We support this because President Duterte himself said to help the private sector to get vaccines for their employees,” Go said.
Marcial as of posting time offered more details of the meeting during a late-afternoon press conference.
