No issue on financial assistance for Marcial – PSC

For as long as the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) continues to recognize and include Eumir Marcial as one of its boxers, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has no problem providing the Tokyo Olympics-bound boxer with his needs.

Officials of the sports agency clarified this matter since Marcial is already a professional boxer and has signed a contract last year with a promoter. Marcial had a winning debut four months ago in Los Angeles, California.

“ABAP is willing to give Eumir Marcial the necessary support. As long as ABAP will endorse it, and the (PSC) board will approve it, I think there is no problem with the support,” said PSC executive director Atty. Guillermo Iroy on Monday, April 26.

After he earned his slot in the Tokyo Olympics, Marcial decided to turn pro when he signed a deal with the MP Promotions of Senator Manny Pacquiao. He left for the US in October to train for his pro debut.

PSC chairman Butch Ramirez said that Marcial left the country without informing them.

Ramirez added that the issue has already been resolved, saying: “We called his attention.”

Marcial’s status with the Armed Forces of the Philippines where he is an enlisted officer with the Army also stays at the moment.

The situation of Marcial isn’t new to the PSC, said Iroy, as he pointed to a similar instance when ABAP requested financial assistance for Charlie Suarez's training prior to the 2019 Southeast Asian Games here.

“We had a precedent in the last SEA Games. Charlie Suarez was endorsed by ABAP and was included in the assistance given by the PSC. His allowances were continually being given to him,” Iroy said.

For now, the PSC continues to provide financial assistance and allowances for Marcial.

In a dialogue with Marcial, national training director Marc Velasco said Marcial justified his move when he left for the US and trained under Hall of Fame American coach Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym.

“He said the main advantage that they have in the US is the size of the athletes he is training with, he found it advantageous to him. Based on the training, there is merit to what he said on the sparring (against faster, taller opponents),” he said.
