American-Filipino H.E.R. wins Oscar best original song

Grammy awardee American-Filipino artist Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, popularly known as H.E.R., won the best original song award for "Fight For You" from the movie "Judas and the Black Messiah" at the 93rd Oscar Awards in the US last Sunday night.
H.E.R. beat other nominees "Hear My Voice" (The Trial of the Chicago 7); "Husavik" (Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga); "Io sì (Seen)" (The Life Ahead); and "Speak Now" (One Night in Miami).
In her acceptance speech, H.E.R. said: “All those days of listening to Sly and the Family Stone, and Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye really paid off.”
In February, H.E.R. was nominated for the same song at the Golden Globes. H.E.R. (an acronym for Having Everything Revealed) co-wrote the song with Tiara Thomas; and music by H.E.R. and Dernst Emile II.

“Judas and the Black Messiah” is the story of Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and his fateful betrayal by FBI informant William O’Neal.
H.E.R., 23, is a Grammy-winning artist. In 2019, she won Grammys for Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Album.
In 2020, H.E.R. was nominated for five awards at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for “I Used to Know Her” and Song of the Year “Hard Place.”
At the In Memoriam segment of the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards in Sept. 2020, H.E.R. sang Sinéad O’Connor’s version of Prince’s original “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
H.E.R. admits: “I’m half Filipino and Filipinos love karaoke.” She was born in Vallejo, California to a Filipino mother and African father.
