PH boxers await new venue for Asian tourney

The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) is now awaiting a decision from the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) board as to where this year’s ASBC tournament would take place.

ABAP secretary-general Ed Picson said Sunday, April 25, that there is no decision yet from the ASBC board if the tournament would be held in Dubai or Bahrain, two possible substitute venues.

“ASBC is looking for an alternative host city, either Dubai or Bahrain,” said Picson.

India is the host for the ASBC tournament on May 21-30 in New Delhi.

The national boxing team, which include three of four Tokyo Olympics-bound athletes in Carlo Paalam, Irish Magno and Nesthy Petecio, is set to join the event where the top fighters in the region are expected to join.

However, it appears that the ASBC board has its own apprehensions after India recorded the world’s highest case in a single day new infections for COVID-19 with 314,835.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) board has already acted last week by denying the request of ABAP for the national boxing team’s trip to India.

PSC Commission Ramon Fernandez on Friday said that the board, however, decided to give the boxers a one-month extension on their training camp in Thailand or look for a competition in Europe.

“We denied that precisely because of the situation in India,” Fernandez said.
