Voice-controlled robot for disinfection made by PLM Eng'g students gets the spotlight in nat'l competition

Students from the College of Engineering and Technology of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) won the top prize in a national competition after completing a project that would greatly help in disinfection - which is crucial amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Collectively called “Team Heisenberg,” the winning group composed of Electronics Engineering students Argen Mary Arceño, Rollison Joshua Tabuyan, Ronn Joaquin Cuenco, Mave Rick Credo, and Michael Buenviaje won in the Maxim Integrated Philippines’ Design Innovation Contest.

The students were given the “Spotlight Award” and emerged as champions for their proposal - which is a voice-controlled ultraviolet sterilization robot for disinfection.

The design of the project also provides features for monitoring purposes.

The PLM students bested seven other finalists in the virtual competition which ran from Jan. 13 to April 6.

Maxim Integrated, a semiconductors producer, pledged a P50,000 prize along with a certificate and plaque of recognition for the best design that incorporated the company’s products.

Meanwhile, University President Emmanuel Leyco congratulated the students for making a mark in the said competition. “Not only were they able to showcase their technical skills, they also put it into practical use amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” he added.

“You are indeed bright spots during these dark days. Again, congratulations and may you continue to use your skills for the betterment of our nation!” Leyco told the students.

Since 1965, PLM has been upholding its mandate of contributing to nation-building through the provision of quality and accessible education.
