PH eyes to start clinical trial on Ivermectin as COVID-19 treatment by 'first week of June' - DOST exec

The Philippines is targeting to conduct its clinical trial on the use of Ivermectin as a treatment for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) by “first week of June”, a top official of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) said on Friday, April 23.

DOST-PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jaime C. Montoya confirmed that the research team from the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila- Philippine General Hospital (PGH), to be led by Dr. Aileen Wang will conduct the clinical trial.

“The research team is already meeting. Dr. Aileen Wang will lead the team,” he told the Manila Bulletin in a Viber message.

“Our target is first week of June,” he said.

In a meeting with President Duterte on April 19, DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña announced that the Ivermectin clinical trial will be conducted in the country.

The DOST chief said he and Health Secretary Francisco Duque III agreed on April 17 to push through with the clinical trial with the Department of Health (DOH) allocating funds for it.

He said the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila- Philippine General Hospital (PGH) was being eyed to conduct the trial with Wang as its lead person.

In 2019, Wang was chosen as the Most Outstanding Researcher of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians.

During a televised public briefing on April 12, de la Peña said they may conduct a clinical trial if they receive such request from the DOH and Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
