PBA to implement 20% salary cut on teams, employees

The PBA will implement a 20-percent salary cut on teams and employees as part of measures to deal with the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said Tuesday, April 20 that league employees, players and coaches are going to be affected by the salary cut which he recommended during a meeting with the Board of Governors the other day.

Utilities who work for the team will be exempted from the deductions, Marcial added.

Marcial had discussions with affected parties prior to the press conference, saying it’s a way to repay the teams which paid them in full since the start of the pandemic.

“Siguro it’s about time na kami naman ang magbigay ng contribution sa teams at sa liga na sinuportahan kami for 16 months (I think it’s about time that we make a contribution to the teams and the league that has supported us for 16 months),” Marcial said.

Deductions will start April 25 for league employees and May for players and coaches.

Full salaries, however, will be given once scrimmages, allowed only in areas under Modified General Community Quarantine, can resume.

Players have been forced to train on their own with Metro Manila and surrounding provinces currently under Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine.

Practices which are divided into groups are permitted in General Community Quarantine areas.
