Multinational giants ABB and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have cemented a tie-up for the development of cloud-based digital solution for the real-time fleet management of electric vehicles.

In a statement to the media, Switzeland-headquartered ABB noted that “the solution will optimize the efficient use of EVs and speed up the electrification of transport fleets.”

At the same time, the company noted that such digital shift will be “helping fleet operators worldwide to maintain 100-percent business continuity as they transition to fully electric.”

It was explained that “the collaboration will combine e-mobility leader ABB’s extensive experience in energy management, charging technology and e-mobility solutions with AWS’s unparalleled portfolio of cloud technologies and software expertise.”

The new platform, which is targeted for commercial rollout by second half of this year, “will offer tailored user experience in a single view platform.”

As expounded, “from the EV charge point to the fleet data dashboard, it will make EV fleet management more efficient,” and its reliability shall also be maximized.

According to Frank Muehlon, president of ABB’s eMobility Division, the two firms’ matching vision about the potential of electric mobility in transforming societies, glued them into that “common goal of making EV fleet management simpler and more accessible.”

He added “this new solution will revolutionize the world of electric mobility,” as it will “integrate EV hardware and software into one ecosystem to provide a seamless user experience.”

Muehlon further expressed confidence that his company’s collaboration with AWS can “propel the use of electric vehicle fleets by giving operators the confidence to make the switch.“

As emphasized, one of the main challenges hobbling EV fleet operators is them opting for third party charging management software, but that offers “limited functionality and ability to customize based on the range of EV models and breadth of charging infrastructure.”

But since developments on EV charging infrastructures have been gaining traction on accelerated pace, ABB emphasized that fleet operators are also “looking for scalable, secure and easily tailored advanced software solutions, combined with easy-to-manage charging hardware, that enable them to plug and go.”

It was from that perspective then that ABB “created a pureplay venture in Berlin, that will develop tailored, scalable and cost-effective technologies for fleet operators, which can be used by all vehicle OEMs (original equipment manufacturers).”

In its collaborative work with AWS and with the aid of machine learning and analytics, ABB said they were able to “design the interoperable fleet management solution to work with all vehicle types and charging infrastructure.”
