Chooks questions GAB's order to suspend VisMin Cup Mindanao leg

The title sponsor of the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup questioned the decision of the Games and Amusements Board to suspend next month’s Mindanao leg following game-fixing allegations that marred last week’s game between Siquijor and Lapu-Lapu City.

Chooks-to-Go president Ronald Mascarinas felt the government regulatory body for professional sports’ move to suspend the Mindanao leg in Dipolog while placing the ongoing Visayas under further observation as “not just simply going overboard; it is going berserk.”

GAB has yet to complete its own investigation of the incident that saw players from both teams make deliberate attempts to miss their free throws and layups.

VisMin officials, however, have already banned Siquijor team along with some of its players and coaches from joining the league while several members of Lapu-Lapu were handed fines and suspensions.

“By suspending the Mindanao leg, the GAB went all over itself by introducing, in effect, a novel double presumption – that teams there are presumed to be presumed guilty of wrongful tendencies for acts committed elsewhere, and by strangers,” Mascarinas said in a lengthy statement issued Monday, April 19.

“It is as if the time-honored presumption of innocence, and the basic elements of due process, and finding probable cause, or basic logic, are mere logical, legal, or ethical niceties it can fully dispense with, anytime.

Mascarinas, whose company decided to continue its support after initial threats to back out of the league following the farcical match, is hoping that GAB reconsiders its decision on the Mindanao phase that was scheduled to start May 20.

Eight teams confirmed their participation for the Mindanao leg prior to the GAB decision.
