Hurdler Eric Cray settles for bronze in Texas meet

Fil-American trackster Eric Cray continued his quest for an Olympic berth in the 2021 Tokyo Games after bagging the bronze medal in the Michael Johnson Invitational at the Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium in Waco, Texas over the weekend.

Cray, who holds three Philippine records, settled for third in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.61 seconds.

Moitalel Mpoke of Texas A&M claimed the gold with 50.63sec while Pablo Ibanez finished silver with 51.32sec.

Despite the podium finish, Cray’s performance was three seconds slower than the Olympic qualifying standard of 48.90 seconds.

It was also slower than his national mark of 48.98sec at the World Challenge Series in Madrid Spain in 2016, as well as his golden performance at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila where he clocked 50.21sec.

Cray, a six-time SEAG gold medalist and 2017 Asian Athletics champion, is expected to see action in three meets this month, and four more in May.

His next race will be the Don Kirby Tailwind Open in New Mexico on April 22, followed by the Drake Relays in Iowa on April 24 and the Texas Meet on April 30.

The 2016 Rio Olympian is also competing in the Mt Sac Relays in Walnut, California, the Pro Track Series in Los Angeles, the USA Track and Field Open, and the Prairie USATF Invitational.
