Donaire to lock horns with Oubaali next month

Filipino pride Nonito Donaire is set to lock horns with WBC bantamweight champion Nordine Oubaali of France next month.

Marking one of the nine cards in the "Showtime Championship Boxing" slated from May to September, Donaire and Oubaali will headline the May 29 bout with Oubaali's belt at stake.

Donaire, who holds a 40-6 record on top of 26 knockouts, shoots for his third bantamweight title win following a unanimous decision loss against unified IBF and WBA super champion Naoya Inoue of Japan last November 2019.

Prior to his match with Inoue, Donaire beat the likes of Ryan Burnett and Stephon Young in November 2018 and April 2019, respectively.

Against Oubaali, the 38-year-old Donaire will be facing an unbeaten champion and a two-time Olympian who owns a 17-0 record with 12 knockouts.

Both Donaire and Oubaali last saw action in November 2019 at the same venue, the Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, where the Filipino boxer lost to Naoya while the Frenchman of Moroccan descent scored a unanimous decision win over Takuma Inoue, Naoya's younger brother.

Oubaali, 34, is on a mission to defend his bantamweight title for the third time since beating American southpaw Rau'shee Warren in January 2019 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Initially set in December last year, the Donaire-Oubaali bout will finally materialize after several intervening factors, mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
