IBF champ Ancajas watches Knicks-Lakers game in NY

Two days after successfully defending the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight title, Filipino boxer Jerwin Ancajas finally spent some quality time in New York.

It was almost a full day for Ancajas as he and his group were at courtside for the NBA game between the visiting Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks at the Madison Square Garden.

The 29-year-old posted several videos on his Facebook account as he rooted for the Lakers.

Prior to that, Ancajas, who was with MP Promotions chief Sean Gibbons, trainer Joven Jimenez, fellow boxers Mark Magsayo and Jonas Sultan, and Brendan Gibbons, visited Consul General Elmer Cato at the Philippine Consulate in New York.

Gibbons said they are still looking at all the options for Ancajas, including his possible opponent and when should be the next fight as he tries to defend the title for the 10th time.

“Working on things for Jerwin,” Gibbons told Manila Bulletin in a message Tuesday, April 13.

Last Sunday (Saturday in the US), Ancajas scored a unanimous decision win against Mexican fighter Jonathan Javier Rodriguez at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

It was Ancajas’ first bout in more than a year as he improved his record to 33 wins with 22 knockouts, one loss and two draws.

Two weeks before the fight, Gibbons has said that they are pursuing a fight with Thai legend Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, a former World Boxing Council super flyweight champion.

Rungvisai has won his last three fights for a 50-5-1 record, and according to Gibbons, they have already reached out to Rungvisai’s handers led by Eddie Hearn.

“That’s always a fight that Jerwin likes. I hope he gets that, we love that fight,” Gibbons said in a recent interview.

Other options for Ancajas are fights against WBC and WBA super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico, and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez of Nicaragua.
