Slight increase of COVID-19 cases in kids seen --- PCGH head

An increase in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in children has been observed in Pasay City recently, Pasay City General Hospital Chief Dr. John Victor De Gracia said on Tuesday (March 9).

“Medyo dumadami rin po yung bata na nakikita namin kasi before, wala kaming nakikita na COVID na bata eh (There is a slight increase of COVID-19 cases among children and we have not seen this before),” De Gracia said in a radio interview on DZRH.

As of last night, March 8, the hospital has two children COVID-19 patients.

De Gracia said that the two new variants of COVID-19 can be an aggravating factor but said that he cannot confirm if the surge is directly linked to it.

"Di ko ho masasabi kasi konti pa lang po ang testing sa mga genome sequencing o genome testing sa mga COVID patients (I cannot say because only a few samples are being sent for genome sequencing)," he added.

De Gracia also said that genome sequencing depends on the contract tracing being done by epidemiologic surveillance unit of the city and they are the ones who will decide if tests should be sent for genome sequencing.

He said that they have noticed that in past weeks, people have been relaxed and were not following basic health protocols.

The PGCH chief also said that they have observed that many of those who are being infected with the virus belong to a single household.

As of 7 a.m. on Tuesday, 31 patients are occupying 49 beds allocated for COVID-19 patients or equivalent to 63 percent occupancy.

“Meron naman po kaming contingency plan po doon. Naabot po namin yung certain number po eh. Magdadagdag kami ng aming beds pa po para sa aming COVID patients (We have a contingency plan in case we reach a certain number, we will add more beds for our COVID patients),” De Gracia said.

The city, which has been considered a high-risk area, logged a total of 501 active cases with 83 new cases as of 8 p.m. on March 8.
