Matt Ganuelas-Rosser calls for rule amendment as brother Brandon misses PBA Draft

Terrafirma guard Matt Ganuelas-Rosser aired his disappointment after his younger brother Brandon failed to make the final list of applicants for the 2021 PBA Draft on Sunday, March 14.

The league released on Monday, March 8, the 86 players who are eligible to be selected in the upcoming draft which is considered as the deepest in recent history.

Eleven Fil-foreigners were removed from the initial record number of 97 aspirants as they either failed to submit the necessary documents from the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Immigration proving their Filpino citizenship, or withdrew their application altogether.

One of them was Matt's younger brother Brandon.

"An outdated rule kept my brother @brandon_rosser out of this year's draft," said Matt through Twitter a few minutes after the league released the list.

Under PBA rules, Brandon is considered as Fil-foreigner because he was born outside the country, in San Diego, California, USA to be exact.

Players considered as Fil-foreigners need to secure the Certificate of Recognition as Filipino Citizen and the Affirmation of Recognition as Filipino Citizen from the DOJ and BI.

Brandon, a former Alab Pilipinas standout, failed to meet the deadline last Friday, March 5, resulting in him missing the cut.

Matt, who was declared a local during the 2014 Draft because he was born in Olongapo City, Zambales, called for the amendment of the rule.

"Brandon will have a future in this league, but I hope this can be an example why we should amend some of these regulations. I believe the days of 'Fil-Shams' are behind us," said the 30-year-old athletic winger, who was included in the recent trade between the San Miguel Beermen and the Dyip centered on CJ Perez.

Still, the older Ganuelas-Rosser wished the best for the new PBA hopefuls. "But I do want to wish this year's draftees good luck! Enjoy the journey!"
