Cameroon's Embiid gives NBA All-Star money to aid homeless

Cameroonian big man Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers will give his winnings from Sunday's NBA All-Star Game to homeless shelters, the team announced Saturday.

Embiid, a four-time NBA All-Star who turns 27 on March 16, committed the money -- at least $100,000 -- to Philadelphia groups including Project HOME, Youth Service Inc. and Sunday Breakfast Mission.

"So many have fallen on such hard times during the pandemic," Embiid said. "I felt it was important to provide more support for individuals and families struggling with homelessness and food insecurity.

"I'm continually grateful for all of the support that Philadelphia and the fans have given me not just around All-Star but all my years in the league. I will continue to help in any way I can."

Embiid ranks second in the NBA with 30.2 points and game and has also grabbed 11.6 rebounds, fifth in the league, and added 3.3 assists, 1.4 blocked shots and 1.2 steals a game so far this season for the 76ers, who lead the Eastern Conference at 24-12.

With 905 points, 348 rebounds and 41 blocks in the first half of the 2020-21 campaign, he joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bob McAdoo to produce such numbers over the first 30 games of a season.

Embiid will play for Team Kevin Durant against Team LeBron James when the NBA's elite gather Sunday in Atlanta.
