300 doses of Sinovac vaccine used in Makati on first day of rollout

All the 300 doses of Sinovac vaccine allocated by the national government to Makati City were administered to health workers at the Ospital ng Makati (OsMak) during the first day of vaccination rollout on Friday (March 5), Mayor Abigail “Abby” Binay said.

Dr. Vergel P. Binay, OsMak director, became the first Makati health frontliner to receive the Sinovac vaccine.

He was then followed by Dr. Max Angelo Terrenal from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Michelle Cuvin - Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist, and other doctors, nurses, and hospital personnel.

“This is a historical moment for Makati’s medical frontliners. For one year they bore the brunt of caring for our Makatizens who have contracted the coronavirus — at the expense of their own health and safety. Today, they are receiving protection in the form of a vaccine that will allow them to save countless lives in the months to come,” the mayor said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Mayor Binay declined to be inoculated, saying that the vaccines should be given to those with high exposure to the coronavirus and are treating patients who have been infected.

"Ang importante sa akin ay mabakunahan ang mga prayoridad na mabakunahan. Kung may matitirang bakuna pagkatapos ng ating frontliners ay 'yun nalang ang sa akin. Kung wala, I will wait for my turn (For me, it is important to immunize our health workers. If there is a vaccine left after our fronliners, that’s what is going to be administered to me. If there is none left, I will wait for my turn),” the mayor said.

The national government allotted 300 doses of Sinovac vaccine for Makati City.

Also present during the ceremonial vaccination were Sec. Vivencio Dizon, deputy Chief Implementer of the National Action Plan Against COVID-19; Dr. Ma. Paz Corrales, Assistant Regional Director of the Metro Manila Center for Health Development of the DOH; and Ma. Luisa Orezca, Executive Director IV of the Philippine National AIDS Council.

Aside from the Sinovac vaccine from the DOH, Makati City has ordered one million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines which will cover not just Makati residents and local government employees, but also non-residents who work in the city.
