1 of 4 South African COVID-19 variant cases in Pasay tests negative after re-swabbing

One of the four cases of the South African variant of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has tested negative, Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano said on Thursday.

In a virtual press briefing, Rubiano said that all four cases including those that they have infected according to their contact tracing efforts have all recovered and were immediately isolated.

“Doon sa apat, isang positive nahawa niya isa yung asawa niya yung dalawa walang nahawa dun sa isa naman nahawa niya yung mga family members niya. Sila pong lahat ay recovered na (One of them infected their partner, two did not infect anyone, while the other got the family members infected. All of them have recovered),” Rubiano said.

Sixteen family members were infected by one of the carriers of the South African variant but Rubiano said they were all contained in a single compound. Upon the recommendation of the Department of Health (DOH), they will all have to be re-swabbed.

The Department of Health on Wednesday said that one of the six cases of the South African variant of COVID-19 being verified was from Pasay as well, raising its number to four.

DOH said on Tuesday that of the six South African variant cases, three are local cases, two are returning Overseas Filipinos (ROFs), and one case is still being verified as to location.

Meanwhile, as the 14-day localized enhanced community quarantine (LECQ) in 30 barangays ends on Thursday, Pasay City would decide on Friday (March 5) whether to extend it or not.

Currently, 210 households in 77 barangays are under LECQ while the entirety of Barangay 183, which has five clusters with two or more COVID-19 cases, is under lockdown.
