PH rower Macaranas raring to compete in Olympic qualifiers

Filipino rower Hermie Macaranas is raring to compete in the upcoming 2021 Canoe Sprint Asian Olympic Qualifier in Pattaya, Thailand in May.

Macaranas said he and John Paul Selencio are paired up for the 1000-meter doubles qualifier while Ojay Fuentes will participate in the 500-m doubles and 200-m singles in non-qualifying events from May 5 to 7.

"Pursigido makapag-qualify sa Olympics kaya 'di po natin pinapabayaan na manghina po tayo (I am determined to qualify for the Olympics that's why we're taking good care of our ourselves properly)," said Macaranas, a gold medalist in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, during the PSC Hour sports program Friday, March 26.

"'Di po talaga kaya mag-training kasi first time po natin mag-lockdown kaya medyo natakot din tayo mag-train pero ngayon talaga pursigidong-pursigido po talaga kami (The country experienced its first lockdown so everybody was scared to go out and train but now, we are really determined to return).

In the hopes of fortifying their training routine, Macaranas said the team is planning to relocate its training venue from Rizal to Tacloban City in the next few days due to the recently-implemented two-week General Community Quarantine in the "NCR Plus" bubble.

It is still unknown how many countries will qualify but at least five countries are projected to book their tickets to the coronavirus-postponed Tokyo Games in July.

Head coach Len Escollante said countries like China, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are teams to look out for, adding that China has already qualified for the Olympics after ranking fourth and bagging four gold medals in the 2019 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.

Should China top anew in the Asian Olympic Qualifier, it may be deemed as a non-bearing spot, said Escollante.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global sporting calendar was greatly affected, and the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation (PCKDF) is just one of the many organizations which lost track of its preparation for the Olympics.

"Para sa coach napakahirap po gumawa ng program na urong-sulong 'yung target date mo (For a coach, it is very difficult to create a program with target dates going back-and-forth)," said Escollante.

Nonetheless, it's like hitting two birds with one stone as the upcoming qualifying tournament will serve as an early preparation for the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The three-man team delegation of Macaranas, Selencio and Fuentes, and Escollante are expected to arrive in Thailand by the second or third week of April and will spend a 15-day quarantine which will end in April 30. Preparation will kick off from May 3 to 4 while competition proper will start from May 5 to 7.
