Students create own togas from scrap fabric

Four fashion design and merchandising students from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde proudly don their handmade graduation togas.

Tricie Mendoza and Beatrice Canete said they first came up with the idea last year when it was announced that their graduation will be done virtually.

"We brought this up to our best friends, Tricia Butler and Katrina River and we all agreed to make our own togas," Canete told the Manila Bulletin.

"Exactly one week before graduation day, it was actually a random moment when Tricie decided to make a DIY (do it yourself) vlog making the toga. She didn't tell that she began making her toga because she was unsure if she could really pull off a non-traditional toga," she added.

The togas were made from scrap fabric from Mendoza's excess fabric from her thesis.

"Tricie ended up helping making the other togas and I helped in the caps to go with it. We made sure each of our togas represented us individually but still had that traditional style," Canete shared.

The quartet wore their handmade togas and caps during their virtual graduation and when they visited their campus.

"Although we wished to have the traditional live graduation ceremony, we were still able to make the virtual experience memorable," Mendoza said.

The students attended their virtual graduation on March 20.
