'Resident Evil' film reboot now has an official title

And it’s coming this September

In 2020, news about two upcoming “Resident Evil” titles got fans of the horror video game franchise excited. One is a CGI series that’s going to be on Netflix, the other is a film that just recently got a title and a release date.

A post from Sony Pictures’ official Twitter account reveals that this new film directed by Johannes Roberts—who is no stranger to the horror, thriller genre—will be called “Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City.” It is slated for a Sept. 3, 2021 release.

This reboot will set the official “Resident Evil” film lore right, following the stories from the first two video games instead of the previous movie iterations of the horror flick. It’s expected to be the official origins story for the franchise, and will be set in 1998 featuring the Spencer mansion from the first video game and the police station from the second.

There’s not much other detail about the film yet, save for the already confirmed cast who will play very familiar characters for “Resident Evil” fans. There’s Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield (no more Alice, yay!), Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker (and this is a performance many are looking forward to), and Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy.

Also in the film are Lily Gao, Neal McDonough, Donal Logue, Chad Rook, and Marina Mazepa.

“Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City” will premiere on Sept. 3, 2021.
