Vaccinated mom gives birth to baby with COVID-19 antibodies

With healthcare workers being prioritized for the COVID-19 vaccination, even pregnant ones have been approved to received this immunization effort.

News has been circulating that a expectant healthcare worker in Florida, USA, received the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine when she was 36 weeks pregnant. She gave birth three weeks after in late January.

A blood sample was extracted as part of the requirements and precautionary measures. "We tested the baby’s cord to see if the antibodies from the vaccine in the mother passed to the baby which is something that we see happen with other vaccines given during pregnancy,” Dr. Paul Gilbert, a local paediatrician in Palm Beach County, Florida, USA.

And true enough, results showed that the baby indeed has Covid-19 antibodies. Gilbert adds, "To our knowledge, this was the first in the world that was reported of a baby being born with antibodies after a vaccination."

Dr. Chad Rudnick, another local paediatrician, believes that this revelation will help protect babies and children from the virus, "This is one small case in what will be thousands and thousands of babies born to mothers who have been vaccinated of the next several months."

But don't get your hopes up yet, the two doctors' published article on medRxiv site revealed that newborns born to vaccinated mothers might still be at risk of being infected. "Further studies have to determine how long will this protection last. They have to determine at what level of protection or how many antibodies does a baby need to have circulating in order to give them protection,” Rudnick said.
