Huey, Gonzales fall short with different partners in ATP Challenger

Philippine team mainstays Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales fell short in their respective bids at the Cleveland ATP Challenger after seeing action with different partners over the weekend.

Huey and Sem Verbeek of the Netherlands yielded in the quarterfinals against Ecuadorian pair Emilio Gomez and Roberto Quiroz, 7-5, 2-6, 10-7, while Gonzales and Nicolas Barrientos of Colombia bowed out in the semifinals at the expense of second seed Robert Galloway and Alex Lawson of the United States, 7-5, 6-4.

The top-seeded Huey and Verbeek had a rough start in the tournament after squeaking past United States’ JC Aragone and Dominican Republic’s Roberto Cid Subervi, 5-7, 6-1, 12-10, and failed to sustain that momentum heading to their match over Gomez and Quiroz.

In contrast, the unseeded Gonzales and Barrientos cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 first-round victory over American wildcard pair Matthew Chen and Jonathan Powell, then hammered down another American duo in Hunter and Yates Johnson, 6-4, 6-3, before losing to Galloway and Lawson.

Despite the defeat, Gonzales thanked Barrientos for their performance and is looking forward to competing in future tournaments.
