Team Lakay's Pacio, Adiwang pick Silva over Minowa

Strawweight champion Joshua Pacio and fellow Team Lakay star Lito Adiwang are rooting for Brazilian Alex Silva over Hiroba Minowa of Japan in their upcoming bout in ONE: Fists of Fury III at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, March 18.

Silva and Minowa are expected to showcase high-level grappling showdown, but the championship experience of the Brazilian fighter might take him a step higher than the Japanese youngster.

"I’m going with Alex Silva in this one, because he has that championship experience. That can’t be overlooked. He’s been at the top and he knows what it takes to become a world champion,” said Adiwang, who once lost to Minowa over a controversial split decision last November.

Adiwang also cited the renowned Singapore stable Evolve MMA for providing quality access to facilities and training partners.

Pacio, on the other hand, scored a hard-earned split decision win over Silva to defend his strawweight belt last January 2020.

The strawweight king himself experienced the grappling specialty of Silva, but didn't succumb and showed guts and improved ground game as well.

But Pacio believes it will boil down to experience, which is obviously an advantage for the former Brazilian strawweight champion.

"Alex is very dangerous with his arm locks and knee bars. If you get caught, there’s no way out. You’re going to tap," said Pacio. "At the same time, Minowa is good with his control. He’s very fluid in side mount, full mount, and even in the guard. It could go down to the wire."

ONE: Fists of Fury III will also feature a women's strawweight bout between Team Lakay's Jenelyn Olsim against Maira Mazar of Brazil, also of Evolve MMA, and a flyweight contest between Fil-Indonesian Aziz Calim and Indonesian Roshan Mainam.

Headlining the event are current lightweight kickboxing titleholder Regian Eersel and No. 2 contender Mustapha Haida and an atomweight muay thai clash between reigning queen Janet Todd and No. 4 fighter Alma Juniku. (Carlo Anolin)
