COVID-19 UK variant cases recorded in Pateros

Pateros Mayor Miguel Ponce III said the UK variant of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been detected in the municipality.

In a Facebook Live broadcast, Ponce said that according to the Department of Health (DOH), two residents of Pateros tested positive for the UK variant, called the B.1.1.7, among those who were confirmed to have the virus last March 13.

He said more cases of the UK variant are expected to be recorded in Pateros as more people are getting tested for COVID-19.

The mayor said this could be the reason why the number of COVID-19 cases surged in the municipality as the UK variant “is 70 percent more contagious and more spreadable.”

As of March 15, the Pateros Health Department recorded 2,225 COVID-19 cases including 2,096 recoveries and 40 deaths, leaving 89 active cases, a sharp increase from two active cases last Feb. 15, according to Ponce.

Last March 13, the Pateros municipal government started implementing the unified curfew hours of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and also imposed a liquor ban that will be in effect until March 31.

Ponce said these are part of the measures by the local government to stop the transmission of COVID-19.

The Pateros Municipal Police Station apprehended 13 for curfew violations and 14 for not wearing face shields from March 15 to early morning of March 16.

The mayor said the municipal government lacks the number of personnel to implement the rules but reminded the public to take the initiative to follow them ,including the wearing face masks and face shields, and observing physical distancing.
