Return of earlier curfew eyed for Metro Manila

Earlier curfew hours might be restored in Metro Manila, Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez said on Wednesday, March 10.

In an interview with DZBB, Olivarez, who is Metro Manila Council (MMC) chairman, said they will convene “today” (March 10) with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benhur Abalos to finalize the curfew hours.

“It will either 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. or 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.,” Olivarez said.

Olivarez said the MMC wants to have unified curfew hours since Metro Manila cities are interconnected.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has also made a call to the Metro Manila mayors to enforce uniform curfew hours to prevent confusion within the public.

​​​​​​​Olivarez said Parañaque will also follow Caloocan and San Juan in reverting back to longer curfew hours. Majority of the Metro Manila cities still have the 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. curfew.

“Ibabalik po natin ulit yung mga chekpoint para we make it a point na sumunod ang taumbayan sa curfew na pinaiimplement ng LGU (We will put up checkpoints again to make it a point that our citizens are following the curfew hours being implemented by the local government unit),” Olivarez said.

Like in Parañaque, Olivarez wants checkpoints to be manned by police officers to make sure that minimum health protocols such as wearing face masks, face shields, and social distancing are being followed.

“Sa Parañaque nagpatayo na kami sa bawat barangay ng composite team kasama po yung ating isang pulis isang tanod sa bawat isang kalsada (In Parañaque, we have set up in each barangay a composite team composed of one police officer and one village watchmen to monitor every street),” he said.
