Obiena battles record-holder Duplantis, former Olympic champions in elite pole vault tilt

Olympic-bound pole vaulter EJ Obiena will be put into test when he goes up against the cream of the crop in the prestigious Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de Calais at the Arena Stade Couvert in Lievin early Wednesday (Tuesday night in France).

In the start list released in the competition website, the 11-player field include Obiena against current world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden, 2012 Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie of France, reigning Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil and two-time world champion Sam Kendricks of the United States.

Other participants include Piotr Lisek of Poland, United States bets Christopher Nilsen, Matt Ludwig and Jacob Wooten, and local bets Valentin Lavillenie and Ethan Cormont.

On paper, Obiena is ranked 10^th based on his personal best outdoor performance and national record of 5.81m, while five players are registered over 6 meters: Duplantis (6.15m), Renaud (6.05m), Kendricks (6.06m), Braz (6.03m) and Lisek (6.02m).

Duplantis’ personal best indoor is at 6.18m, which also happens to be the current world record.

But Obiena is up for the challenge, using his three-tournament stints in Germany that include two gold medals as a morale-booster in this star-studded event.
